I am a teacher at a rural school. How do I get a telescope for my school?

Currently, Smithsonian Scientists Taking Astronomy to Rural Schools (STARS) is taking initial interest requests from K-12 public schools on our general interest form. Please note that Smithsonian STARS will roll out first to schools in Arizona beginning in Fall 2025. Regular updates on the progress of the program will be posted to the Schools section of this website, and we will contact teachers in other states that have expressed interest as the program moves into those areas.

How do I know if my school is considered a rural school?

STARS defines rural schools as Rural Remote (>25 miles from an urbanized area) and Rural Distant (>5 miles but <25 miles from an urbanized area). Your school's status will be confirmed during the formal intake process. Or you can confirm your school's status with the National Center for Education Statistics Local Lookup Tool.

How soon will STARS be available in my state?

STARS will roll out to rural K-12 public schools in Arizona beginning in Fall 2025. We do not yet have a schedule for every state across the country. Updates will be posted to the website and will be sent to teachers who have filed a general information request as soon as we have a date for intake for your state.

I heard that STARS is going to all rural public schools. Can private or homeschool groups participate?

Right now, STARS is available only to public, public charter, and tribal nation schools. We encourage homeschools and private schools to partner with public and public charter schools in their area to get access to this program and its resources.

Why is STARS only in Arizona in Fall 2025?

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory has an established presence in Arizona through our Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory in Amado, Arizona, and is working with teachers and schools in the area first to ensure that the program and the curricula are ready to launch nationwide.
