Launching in 2025, Smithsonian STARS is a major program of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO). Our mission is to bridge gaps in access to astronomy and STEM experiences and learning opportunities by equipping every rural school in America with a telescope and astronomy lesson plans.
At full capacity, STARS will be supported by a national team based at SAO in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and seven regional teams located around the country.
