One Sky.
Infinite wonder.
Founded by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO), Smithsonian STARS (Scientists Taking Astronomy to Rural Schools) is a nationwide, strategic investment in the future of rural education. We’re on a mission to inspire the next generation of explorers by expanding access to and understanding of the spectacular night skies that shine over rural America.
Inspiration awaits.
Every rural school in America gets:
A Celestron NexStar 6SE Telescope
Educator Training led by Smithsonian Scientists
Standards-aligned K-12 Lesson Plans
Community Star Parties
We’re doing this because curiosity is an animating force of human progress.
The cosmos has always inspired the next generation of explorers and innovators.
Our Nation’s rural children look up at clear, dark skies every night, but face opportunity gaps in pursuing the curiosity that these skies inspire.
At Smithsonian STARS, we believe the sky belongs to everyone, and that curiosity has no zip code.
First Light
Smithsonian STARS has officially launched. In spring 2026, the program completed its initial pilot phase across some rural schools in Arizona. Following the success of this initial cohort, we are currently preparing for a comprehensive, statewide rollout across Arizona in fall 2026.
Our mission is to gradually expand to other states as the STARS program grows, eventually reaching every state and every rural school in the nation.
Powered by you.
STARS has received generous funding from individuals, corporations and foundations, and it can only grow with continued philanthropic support.
Our Nation’s rural schoolchildren need your help, and you can join our Founding Donor, Mr. John C. Ryan, in supporting the next generation of explorers.
